San Marino Rotary Club Touring The Historic Carnegie Observatory By Gilda Moshir on Wednesday, November 16, 2022
On October 27, 2022, about 20 members from the San Marino Rotary Club carpooled to the historic Carnegie Observatory to learn about the invention of the Hubble Telescope and how we gather data from the 3 famous observatories around the world. From the members who visited, this is what they share of their experience at the tour:
Grant Fujiwara – What stood out for me is that I didn’t know Hubble was from Southern California and that his discovery made Einstein recalculate some of his theories. Mike Driebe: Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood, the Carnegie observatory provides a remarkable glimpse into the history of astronomy. During our tour, we learned about everything from the discovery of exoplanets to the nature of the expanding universe.
John Donovan: I was impressed with the passion and commitment of the staff and the amount of outreach they do. I was also impressed with the
directors extraordinary intelligence and knowledge and his humility.
Mary Ulin : Not only did I learn more about the expanding universe and the amazing research that is being done right here in Pasadena, I
appreciated our very inquisitive Rotarians who asked very smart questions Rodney Gregson: With a PhD in Astronomy, and being the Director of the Observatories, Dr. Mulcahey was definitely the most intelligent and highly educated tour guide I have ever had!
Gilda Moshir: It was fascinating to hear about the personality of Edwin Hubble, a cat lover, brilliant man and someone who liked to be in the limelight and that he was a resident of San Marino.
